How often should i take my dog to vets while doing agility?

I have a male sheltie who is aproximately 26lbs and about 16-17 inches at the withers. I actively participate in agility practices at a dog club and safety is my number one priority with joey. How often should i be taking him to the vets for check ups and such? What should i be checking and/or asking my vet?
