How do you help your cat when it is having a hairball?

My cat always begins to have a hair ball,but he just sits there and makes coughing choking sounds and never spits it out,he just swallows it back down. I tend to pat his back when this happens. Im just wondering if that's appropriate or not and if there is anything I can do to help him while he is experiencing this?
